Clip of the Week: Jumbo Humboldt Squid

Humboldt squid are an interesting and formidable deep ocean species, most commonly found at depths of 200 to 700 metres. These giant predators may grow to over 5 feet in mantle length, weigh up to 100 lbs, and are capable of traveling through the water at speeds of 15 mph. Humboldt squid often feed in large swarms, exhibiting the flashing behavior seen in this video, and investigating divers with aggressive curiosity.

As the range of the jumbo squid expands northward from the deep water coasts of Chile, up through the Pacific along California, Oregon and Washington, with some sightings now in Alaska, this carnivorous and highly specialized hunter has impacted marine fisheries and become a subject of great interest as scientists study shifting ocean temperatures, to which this species appears to quickly adapt.

With a razor-sharp beak, barbed tentacles and suckers ringed in sharp teeth, swimming with these giant squid can be a dangerous endeavor – you can get up-close and personal without the need for specialized equipment or body armor though, simply View more incredible encounters with Humboldt squid at OceanFootage.com!
