Beginning of squid mating ritual at night. Squid begin to gather, they come out of the deep and from their hiding places in the kelp to mid water, not at the ocean floor nor the surface. There is no mating frenzy yet, the squid are just now rising toward the light of the moon. Some males grasp females. A few juvenile Pacific Mackerel swim through the shot. Ocean water looks black at night. Squid are an important food source for many ocean creatures, and healthy reproduction of squid is important to the entire ocean eco-system.
