Underwater view, a male Garibaldi fish (Hypsypops rubicundus) makes a dance above the reef, trying to persuade any female Garibaldi to come lay her eggs on his nest. He does persuade another Garibaldi to come near, but then he chases the visitor away when it makes a move to eat the eggs. The nest is a patch of dark algae, on a vertical reef face, eggs are laid there by passing females. This shot begins over the reef, drops down to reveal the nest. Beauty shot. Other fish on the reef are calico bass (Paralabrax clathratus), Seniorita fish (Oxyjulis californica), and opaleye fish (Girella nigricans). This reef is between the island and a kelp forest.
